Summary

The SIBSAC project proposes an integrated treatment of ship wastewater and contaminated sediments in the port and coastal areas where oil depots are present, and the utilization of the treated material for industrial and other uses.

The wastewater contaminated by xenobiotic compounds and discharged into the marine environment causes a serious ecological problem due to the persistence and accumulation of these compounds. The large quantities of contaminated sediments that require dredging in order to maintain or restore the coastal and port areas require technically sound management strategies at low costs.

The main objective of this research project is to present an integrated treatment plant, that includes physical, chemical and biological stages, for the removal of contaminants from sediments and ship wastewater. The proposed sediment treatment process is able to removes both organic and inorganic contaminants and has the advantages of using a simple technology with costs that can be reduced by the recovery of the extraction solutions.
